Community Connection: The Social Benefits of Vibrant Urban Art
It can be difficult to avoid conflict when subcultures and commercial players share the same space. Find out how urban art can connect people from all backgrounds.
Prisma Estúdio Lisboa is a non-profit association that supports emerging artists. It runs an art residency, studio, gallery, and a variety of events from rap battles to poetry reading. However, the venue in an inner courtyard was not easily noticed and people could not find their way there. It was also challenging to balance freedom at the culture centre while maintaining harmony with the neighbours.
The solution was a transformative 28m2 mural. I was keen to continue my signature floral motif. Serendipitously, a flower shop had previously operated on the premises, and therefore Prisma was originally called Casa de Semente (House of Seed). There were still plenty of beautiful plants in the courtyard. The people in charge of the building liked my artwork, too, and gladly approved this project.
The giant fantasy garden and striking pink background brought positive attention, wow reactions, and praise immediately. The neighbours loved it. One of them brought me coffee and cake when I was painting. The sweetest comment was from an elderly woman who thanked me and said that my mural brings her joy. Vibrant urban art unites people.
“This is amazing!”
