POV: Mural Art Doesn't Change the World, But It Can Convey Hope
Creative minds unite at Ljubljana Street Art Festival. Learn how street artists make a big impact and inspire with visuals.
In 2023, the Ljubljana Street Art Festival focused on sustainability. They wanted to see how street artists address this important yet challenging topic. I was invited to Slovenia to participate and paint a mural with Superflinda in the autonomous Metelkova culture centere (30th anniversary that year). We had just 3 days to ideate, plan, sketch, and paint the 9x4m wall on the façade of Lovci building. It was intense, but this collaboration became one of my all-time favourites.
Synergy of Street Art and Sustainability
Optimism is essential for a sustainable future. As Dr Jane Goodall has said: "the greatest threat to the future is apathy." Thus, it was clear to us that we needed to convey hope and inspire people. Superflinda is super talented with lettering, and I create striking images inspired by nature. We chose organic, graphic visuals and an empowering message open to interpretations: E V O L V E. Despite challenges, there is always hope. We can evolve on a personal level. Our society is not fixed. The future is unwritten. There are unlimited possibilities.
Dare to stand out
Successful adverts are simplified. Similarly, our simplified, graphic style stands out positively surrounded by the visual cacophony of the Metelkova. Our mural got noticed. The flowers intrigued visitors and the spacing of the letters also evoked thoughts of love. L O V E / E V O L V E
