Seaside Sensations: The Surprising Benefits of Murals at a Public Beach
The impressive 270m2 mural ensemble at Matinkylä Beach in Espoo is a beautiful example of what local activists can achieve. It also has surprising benefits.
The City of Espoo commissioned an impressive body of work from our Mimmit peinttaa art collective. Now, 270m2 of ‘Matinkylä Sea Garden’ murals flourish and delight residents at the beach all year round. The impact is amplified during the dark season: these murals turn winter blues into bloom.
In Finland, public space is typically designed pragmatically, and sadly all too often, bland choices seem rational. However, study shows that the aesthetics of joy have a positive impact on well-being, and they can help us thrive. Thus, I designed this mural concept to complement the natural marine environment using colours and elements that bring joy to everyone. Art is not just a luxury in life.
The Espoo Environmental and Building Committee noted the benefits of our mural art, too. We received an honourable Hurraa! mention for the “particularly outstanding and successful execution.” The Chairperson Johanna Karimäki stated that “these painted artworks create a pleasant and visually cohesive experience. The committee considered this enhancement of the beach's appearance to be a significant contribution to the quality and comfort of the built environment."
Also, this project strengthens local pride. It is an inspirational example of what local activists can achieve. The initiative came from the Matinkylä association, and with their help, we received the permit and funding from the City of Espoo. In addition to me, our Mimmit peinttaa team included artists Pia Iiramo, Leena Pukki, Minttu Pyykkönen, and producer Rosa Hultman.
At the award ceremony, it was declared that unquestionably the everyday built physical environment affects well-being. This case is a prime example of the positive change we can achieve with joyful murals. I have never received as much spontaneous positive feedback and praise.
